Rolling bearings

Generally, bearings secure a mutual position of fixed and turning parts, and transfer load of a shaft to other machine parts. Friction is formed between the moving surfaces of the shaft and bearing. There are two types of bearings according to the loading force's direction: radial and axial.

Advantages: Relatively small dimensions and low weight, suitable for high revolutions, little maintenance, relatively small losses due to friction and almost identical in standstill and in motion (fast bringing the machine into operation)

Disadvantages: unsuitable for very high peripheral speed (centrifugal forces – fatigue of the rings), always noisier than plain bearings, no vibration dampening
